A Day in the Life of Cake - Filming Kickball

Working at a startup can be both exhilarating and exhausting. So we at Cake decided to let off some steam a couple weeks ago and head for Chrissy Field in San Francisco for a fun day of competitive gaming. On the agenda was some kickball, munching of morsels, an egg toss and a fascinating Swedish game called Kubb.

We captured the day in our latest Cake video… if you haven’t seen it yet, check out the fun.

Now, in my career as a documentary filmmaker I’ve filmed all over the world: South Korea, Italy, Laos, Hong Kong, the Bronx. And I’ve had to get all kinds of people to talk: drug dealers, mob bosses, pimps, politicians. But I wasn’t prepared for the herd of grade schoolers that plowed through our newly constructed kickball diamond. But my instinct soon kicked in and I began rolling. The Cake team surely wouldn’t let these punks literally steal second base…OK, it was a Frisbee so you can’t totally blame them. Sure enough, we had a Kickball duel. The spunky kids quickly mobilized a huge team in a matter of a couple minutes. It was a testament to the remarkable power of social networking that they were able to gather such a large force so quickly. We began to worry about our chances in such a game. It was Lord of the Flies meets The Longest Yard. These kids seemed dead set on not just beating us, but humiliating us on the green pasture by the sea.

Lucky for us, the adults who were ostensibly in charge of these miniature kickball A-Rods figured out what was going on and put the immediate kibosh on things. Fingers were pointed and mutterings of "we shall meet again" were heard as they retreated across the plain. So we turned our attention to each other. We picked sides and got the ball rolling (no pun, right?).

Needless to say our CEO’s team – which I had the misfortune to play on – got crushed. We clearly suffered from my having to play double-duty as both an infielder and the event documentarian.

But it just goes to show you that little stories lurk everywhere. At Cake we believe in the power of storytelling to help inform you, make difficult decisions and generally enrich your day. We plan to do more and begin to introduce you not only to the Cake staff but also to the broader community of investors out there. We hope you enjoy it.
